We’re already back in Portland. The trip to Vegas was… strange. A whirlwind. Maybe our return to Portland has been even weirder.
I’ll leave it at that for now.

We just arrived in Las Vegas. Above are a few photos of Augustus taken on the way here. Considering he’s never flown before, he did well, though I don’t think he knew what to make of the short taxi ride to the hotel!
Right now he’s psyching himself up for a walk out on the strip. We’ll try to keep you posted!
Augustus Gladstone has been on a mission to locate any relatives he can find over the past few weeks. After doing a bit of research at a family tree website, he now believes he’s found his last and only living relative, who now lives in Las Vegas. His spirits are high and my assistant just informed me that Augustus has bought an airline ticket to Vegas in hopes of tracking down this relative and meeting him.
Apparently Augustus is wasting no time: his flight is in two days! This puts our production and crew in sort of a bind to scramble and get travel plans arranged in time to follow him to Vegas. When on location, it may be challenging for me to keep current with the blog, but I’ll try to write a few updates from the road. It should be an adventure, since Augustus has never been on a plane before: he seems to be excited. He also has some obvious trepidation about visiting ‘Sin City’. Vegas, here we come!
Greetings! I am the producer of this film. My name is Mischa Jakupcak. I have been working in independent filmmaking in the Northwest for the past seven years. This production is markedly different from my past projects in a few ways. First off, its refreshing and liberating to be working with such a small crew! Most films I have worked on had 50-90 crew members. We, however, are operating with a small, handpicked crew of 12 talented individuals. This gives us a lot more freedom to grab shots in various locations and offers our team an element of agility which a crew of 70 could not dream of having. We are using the Canon 5d, which was originally designed as a still camera that journalists could use to take video notes. So because it looks like a still camera, it is less intrusive and lends itself to allowing our camera team to capture footage without intimidating Augustus or other interviewees with a large cumbersome camera.
Also most of the films I have worked on in the past have been fictional narratives, so it feels refreshing to be following an actual person and trying to find Augustus’ story as we go along, rather than having a script and know exactly where we will be on any given day. One challenge is that each member of our team must fulfill several different roles. For instance, I feel like I am production coordinator, production manager, travel coordinator, accountant as well as producer. But its a fun challenge and I think we are getting some great stuff.
I will be adding a few updates to the blog because Robyn, our director, is pretty busy with filming. Filming has been going pretty well. Augustus has been occupied lately researching and working on his family tree. He thinks he has located a guy in Las Vegas who he is related to. His spirits are high and we are excited about where this may lead.
Feel free to post questions regarding production or about the project.
We’re still at it! The crew has just taken a much needed week’s break from the Augustus shoot. We’ve just returned today and are now shooting timelapse imagery in and around Portland. We were originally planning on following Augustus to a doctor’s appointment tomorrow, but that appointment has just been rescheduled for October 3rd. Augustus says he’s never been to a medical doctor. He says he’s never been sick. It seems like the only reason he’s agreed to go is because, as he puts it, “it’ll make your movie more exciting”. We’re hoping to find a medical reason behind his lack of hair and pale skin.
So far, this isn’t much of a blog. The good news: we’ve been busy. Production began on August 6th and we’re now into our 13th day of shooting The Immortal Augustus Gladstone. Things are settling down and we’re already falling into rhythm with Augustus (he’s a creature of habit). He never tires of having a film crew hanging around; in fact he seems to thrive on it. He’s endlessly hospitable and friendly and enjoys all of us, even at our worst. On the first day of the shoot he quickly learned all our names.
So far, we’ve spent some time following him around Portland and visiting him at a few of his favorite haunts. In general he leads a quiet existence. He tries to blend in as much as possible (though he sticks out like a sore thumb).
For those of you who enjoyed Augustus’ YouTube videos and want more, I think he’s distracted by production and has, in effect, lost interest. He’s started referring to our documentary as a continuation of his YouTube videos and a couple of times he’s compared our film to a reality T.V. show of his life (which seems to be a compliment, or at least, that’s how I’m taking it).
The photos, above, are a few interior still shots I took during my first visit with Augustus.
Stay tuned… I’ll try to keep you inform as I can fine time.
